Governor Brewer Releases Plan to Combat Recovery Act Fraud, Waste and Abuse

Press Release

Date: April 1, 2010
Location: Phoenix, AZ

Governor Jan Brewer today announced the State of Arizona is committed to overseeing the prudent fiscal and programmatic management of funds entrusted to the state provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.

As such, Governor Brewer's Office of Economic Recovery (OER), in cooperation with the Office of the Auditor General, the state's General Accounting Office and the Governor's Accounting Office released today a
22-page resource for state agencies in order to prevent fraud, waste and abuse from occurring within the programs and projects funded with ARRA resources.

"From my perspective, the use of precious taxpayer funds requires the highest level of accountability," said Governor Brewer. "Therefore, it is crucial that all levels of government make certain the proper mechanisms are in place to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars."

Arizona has been recognized as a leader by the federal government and national organizations for its work on establishing an innovative and dynamic reporting platform. In keeping with that same pace, Governor Brewer has asked her Office of Economic Recovery to oversee the process of directing state agencies to review their existing internal control plans and update and/or amend the plans, if necessary, to satisfy Recovery Act compliance and oversight requirements.

The plans will be further reviewed by OER as well as the state's General Accounting Office and other oversight agencies that will be investigating allegations of fraud, waste and abuse. The purpose of the review is to identify any perceived vulnerabilities or concerns, either based on the substance of the plans or on the results of past audits or investigations involving particular agencies, and to assist agencies in implementing suitable solutions.
